What are you happy to spend?

Indoor heat load

How much heat are you making?

200 W
709W of heat to lose
1.0L/h of sweat if evaporation did it all
heat ≈ P × (1/η − 1), η ≈ 22%

The body turns only about a fifth of its energy into work at the pedals. The rest is heat, which outdoors the wind carries away. Indoors, a fan is doing that job.

How to choose

Power accuracy

Quoted as ±%. Within about 2% is fine for structured training. Consistency between sessions matters more, so your zones mean the same thing every week.

Flywheel / inertia

A heavier effective flywheel smooths the pedal stroke and feels more like the road. Light flywheels feel notchy at low cadence.

Gradient & max power

Simulated gradient matters if you ride virtual climbs. Max power only matters if you sprint well above 1,500 W.

Noise

Direct drive is far quieter than wheel-on. Your drivetrain usually ends up the loudest part.

Axle fit

Most modern road bikes use 12×142 mm thru-axles; older ones 130/135 mm quick release. Check the adapters in the box.

Cassette

Some include one, some don't. Budget for it, plus a lockring tool, if it's missing.

Quick questions

Do I need a smart trainer to use Zwift?

No. Zwift can run from a power meter or speed and cadence sensors on a basic trainer. A smart trainer adds automatic resistance and gradient control, which is what makes structured workouts and virtual climbs feel right.

Direct drive or wheel-on?

Direct drive takes your rear wheel off and connects the frame to the trainer's own cassette. It's quieter, more accurate and saves your tyre. Wheel-on trainers are cheaper but are rarely 'smart'.

Will it fit my bike?

Check your rear axle first. Most modern road bikes use 12×142 mm thru-axles, older ones 130/135 mm quick release, and trainers usually ship with adapters. Also check the freehub body (Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo) and whether a cassette is included.

Do I really need a fan?

It helps a lot. Indoors there's no airflow, so most of your waste heat stays with you. A strong fan does more for comfort than a trainer upgrade.
