Bolt clamp force

What does that torque actually do?

5.0 N·m
5.0kN clamp force

Grease lowers friction, so the same torque gives more clamp force. That's why the number printed on a part assumes a specific thread prep. Follow it, and use the paste it asks for.

How to choose

Range

Most bike fasteners sit between 2 and 15 N·m, and stem and seatpost clamps are often 4–6 N·m. Cranks and cassette lockrings need a higher range.

Type

Click (set it, it clicks), preset (fixed value) or beam/dial (watch a needle). Click type is the best all-round choice.

Accuracy

Good click wrenches are accurate to a few per cent. Technique is the bigger error: jerking the handle, or working in the bottom fifth of the scale.

Drive & bits

Check which hex and Torx bits come with it. Modern bikes mostly need 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm hex and T25.

Storage

Wind a click wrench back to its lowest setting after use. A compressed spring slowly drifts the calibration.

Quick questions

Do I need a torque wrench for aluminium parts?

It matters most for carbon, but it's still useful on alloy. Over-tightening strips threads and under-tightening lets parts slip. Follow the number printed on the part.

What torque do stem bolts need?

Low values, often in the 4–6 N·m range, but always use the figure marked on the stem or in the maker's instructions.

Can I use a car torque wrench?

Usually not. Most car wrenches start at far higher torques than bike bolts need, and accuracy is poor at the low end of their range.
